A Welding Quality Management System WQMS ensures the appropriate level of quality required and safe welding processes through a systematic approach. This approach includes three essential components that together maintain welding standards.
Welders must undergo assessment and qualification specific to their tasks to meet welding requirements. This qualification lasts for six months, after which welders must re-test to maintain certification. The qualification process involves:
A key component of a WQMS is using qualified welding procedures. A WPS must undergo thorough testing to ensure it produces welds that consistently meet required quality standards.
The Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) supports the WPS, verifying that the welding procedure can achieve the necessary mechanical properties. The PQR includes critical details such as materials, welding positions, and preheat temperatures used during testing. Together, the WPS and PQR ensure that welding projects meet industry standards like AS/NZS 1554 or ISO 9606.
A WQMS incorporates a framework to manage quality throughout welding operations. The AS/NZS ISO 9001 guidelines offer a structured approach to quality management. Additionally, AS/NZS ISO 3834 specifies the required documentation and processes to support the quality management system effectively for welding. These standards can be found at HERE.
